Bravery + The Argument of Now

I am surrounded by photographs. As I sit at my desk to my left is a cubby of old pictures from my childhood. Directly in my line of sight over my computer monitor is a mantel with photographs from our last beach vacation. In my bedroom I have boxes of prints from high school and college. Most of these photographs are not professional. Some I have taken, some others have taken. But, each image is a piece of a memory I want to remember.

People who hire me to take their picture are brave. They are brave and they understand the importance of remembering The Now. I don't love how I look in pictures (there, I said it) but I force myself to be in them because what if I am not here tomorrow and these snapshots are the main memories the girls have of me? I am in awe of the mother I photograph a week after she has her baby. She is letting herself be memorialized in a less-than-perfect physical state. She understands that someday that picture is going to make her smile. That picture will make her look at her husband and say, "Remember when…." And, I promise it will be followed by, "We were so young and THIN."

I have been working on this post for some time. It started around November. I got lost in what to say. Today I saw This Post. Please, PLEASE follow the link and read it. It says everything I have been wanting to say…but in a much more lyrical way.

The bottom line: All of my clients are so, SO brave for choosing to have their picture taken and so, SO wise for understanding the power of capturing their family right here and now.

2011 Retrospective: February

The 2011 Retrospective continues…February!

Reena is so gorgeous, I can barely stand it!

They Had a Baby

She was really early, and tiny, and adorable. But most importantly, totally healthy. And, I have never seen happier parents.

2011 Retrospective: January

When you have little kiddos and a young family looking back is fun. It's amazing to see where you were a year ago and see how much family life has changed. As a way to bid adieu to 2011 and hello to 2012 I have decided to do a retrospective of sorts. Here we go!

Winding Down

The Holiday Photography Season is coming to a close. The weather is getting cooler, the leaves are falling and Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away.  I have teamed up with Bean Work Play Cafe to offer one last set of Holiday Mini-Sessions. These sessions will be held at Bean, in a comfortable indoor setting. Check out the details below, I hope to see you there!

Credit Cards!

I am accepting Credit Cards again. Very exciting! Especially those of you who like those Delta SkyMiles on your AmEx.

Netflix got me thinking. They kind of messed up and made it harder for their customers to use their service. I wondered what would make life easier on MY customers. No doubt, accepting credit cards would.

Yay for Credit Cards!

I sure don't want little dude thinking I am stinky.

Happy Tuesday!

Beans.

Ellie calls it Beans. Which is funny, because her nickname is Bean. It's really Bean Work Play Cafe. And, it's awesome. To make a long explanation short, it's a place you can work while your kiddos play.  The chairs are comfortable, the wi-fi is fast and the refrigerator is stocked with Diet Coke, need I say more?!?

Since Ellie's school started this year I have made Beans my new after-school home. Ellie gets to play and dress up and hang out with babies (her most favorite thing) and I get to work (which, really, is one of my most favorite things).

Tonight Beans is hosting a Back to School Bash and I am going to be setting up a super cool Photo Booth with a fun backdrop and props (care of the funny, talented and wickedly creative Cynthia). Come by, hang out, grab some grub and sit on the couch (it's really comfy…more than once I have wondered if it's proper co-working etiquette to sleep on it).

Click on through below to see what the fun is all about!

Sara and Dan!

It's a small world! I was so lucky to get to shoot Sara and Dan's wedding with Robin of Robin Gaucher Photography. When Robin sent me the wedding intel I realized that Sara was the sister of one of my favorite neighbors, Sami, who was also marrying them. So fun! This is just a tiny sneak peak of the awesome-ness captured for their wedding at the Fabulous Fox Theatre.

{Personal Project}

The past two years have found me very busy, happily snapping away photographs of babies, families and weddings. I have (seriously) THE most amazing clients who are constantly patient and understanding. All the while teaching me how to be a better photographer and a better person.

In the next couple of months things have to slow down while I have and recover from a bit of surgery (nothing horrible or earth shattering, I promise). While recovering, I’m not going to be able to chase after toddlers or hoist kiddos onto swings.

As I have been planning my down-time my mind has been busy thinking about how I can keep my camera active while being a bit nicer to my body. Sometimes it’s nice to take pictures that I want to take, to feel a relationship to the light and my subject that is pure and simple and easy.

I want to photograph…adults (GASP!).

I am looking for subjects who are at a place in their life that they want to remember.

It has to be unique. It has to be personal. It has to be meaningful.

You don’t have to share with me what IT is, but you do have to tell me one word to describe it.

You pick the outfit, the hair, the makeup (or lack of). I am cool with costumes or get-ups…whatever represents where you are in your life.

We pick a locale together.

It will be shot at sunrise or sunset, so be prepared for strange hours.

I will post the images on my website, but no other information about you.

Shoot me an email (marti@picturemommy.com) with your “word” if you’re interested.  This is a chance to do something for YOU. To remember who you are right NOW.

OH! And, it’s free. I cannot promise timely editing. But when everything is said and done, you will get a disc with the images I think are worthy.
