Baby Max:: Such a Love!

I love hearing stories of how couples meet. I find the stories enchanting. I love hearing about their lives before they had kids because I know how different life is after kids. Chris and I met in high school…oh yes, we're THAT couple (my sister married her high school sweetheart also, must be something with us Henderson girls). Chris and I married at 22 and Ellie came along about two years later. We went from College to babies pretty fast which didn't leave much time for gallivanting.

Anne and Jergen had the greatest stories of traveling the world. Their house is dotted with fantastic travel finds and they tell the best stories of how each treasures made it home. The love they have for each other was obvious and touching. I got choked up a couple of times because of how thoughtful and sweet they are to each other. Jergen had the fantastic idea of putting Max on a stack of their collected art books then made sure Anne's favorite was on top so it would be in most of the pictures. So sweet!  Max is the obvious extension of the love they have for each other. They both look at him with tenderness and are crazy about him. This is what I love about being a photographer. Getting to capture the sweet moments of families and watching them fall in love all over again every time they look at each other. Oh, and did I mention their house is awesome?!?

Lincoln: Sweet Little Boy!

Oh goodness, sweet baby boys…I have had so much fun shooting, editing and now blogging about these tiny little guys. As a mom of two girls, I am completely in awe of boys.

Lincoln was sweet and cuddly and didn't particularly enjoy being naked. He had a fantastic head of dark hair and REALLY liked when his daddy held him. I told Amy and Bryan that I am always excited when my clients have houses that are more interesting than mine (which they always do because my house is uber boring). I totally love their wall colors, they added such a fun dimension to Baby Lincoln's photographs.

Renae and Derrick: {Baby on the Way}

A small piece of business…time is running out for my winter special. 25% of sessions done by and prints ordered before February 28th. I do have a couple of sessions open for next week, shoot me an email or give me a call to set one up.

Now, on to the super fun stuff…

I love expectant parents! They are brimming with excitement and anticipation, counting down the days until their new family member arrives. Renae and Derrick were no exception. She was still on the post-baby-shower-high and he was proud of the nursery he put together. I wish I could bottle the energy of expectant parents and take a sip of it when I am running low on energy, it is so pure and loving.

4 Tips for Great Newborn Pictures!

Babies! Babies Babies!

They are fantastic! They are new and sweet and squishy, everything that can make a picture absolutely perfect.

This last month has been baby intensive for me and I loved every minute of it. It has been too cold to be outside and cuddling inside with sweet babies has been fantastic!

Here are my top four tips for a great newborn shoot.

1. Act Fast!

  • The best time to photograph a baby is in the first 10 days after being born. They are still pliable and not too awake. I have photographed babies ranging from 5-10 days old and it is amazing how much more awake the 10 day-olds are than the 5 day-olds. Bottom line, the sooner the better for those perfectly serene baby pictures! Most photographers I know (myself included) keep appointments open for babies. It's best to contact your photographer of choice a month or so before delivery and set up a tentative date, both parties understanding the date is flexible depending on delivery.

2. Feed that Baby!

  • Don't fight the beast…feed it!! I suggest moms feed the baby about 30 minutes before I am schedule to arrive. With most babies that will give us an hour or two before they need to eat again. However, all of the jostling, poking and prodding often leads to the baby wanting to be fed sooner than normal. Moms, don't worry about the extra feedings during a shoot, it's totally normal and one of the best ways to keep our little subject happy. Photographers, be sure to schedule enough time to fit in feedings and diaper changes!

3. Accessorize!

  • Take a little time to do a little shopping! I have had great success finding adorable, handmade baby hats on Etsy. They also have headbands and legwarmers that help give baby pictures a fun twist. I arrive at each shoot with a few hats and other props, but I always prefer incorporating more personal items. Other accessories to use…adult scarfs (to wrap the baby in), baskets, bowls, trays and fun baby blankets. During these cold winter months the babies often protest to being totally naked, so cute diaper covers are great as well!

4. Relax!

  • Taking newborn pictures is an awesome process. It documents the first days of your life as a new or expanded family. Don't worry if the baby poops, cries, screams, spits up…us photographers have seen it before and it is not a big deal. I always have an extra shirt and baby wipes on hand in case I get hit (which I have…more than once). The backdrops are washable and Photoshop is amazing. There is nothing in a newborn shoot that should cause stress, it's a celebration of this new, perfect life!
